QPR Goalkeeper Linked With Move To Ligue 1

QPR number one and former Stevenage and Doncaster Rovers player, Seny Dieng, is being heavily linked with French Ligue 1 side Reims, according to journalist Darren Witcoop .

The Senegalese international has been one of QPR’s shining lights in recent years, and his performances have not gone unnoticed at Loftus Road. Now entering the final year of his contract with the R’s, they may look to cash in on Dieng this summer.

Next season will be Gareth Ainsworth’s first full season as manager, and will also see him oversee his first summer transfer window with the club. The former Wycombe Wanderers manager joined up with his former club in February following the sacking of Neil Critchley who won just one of 12 games in charge. Next season will all be about rebuilding for QPR as they look to find former glory. Ainsworth looks as if he is a long term option, similar to his project at Wycombe and he will want to hit the ground running next season to remove any pressure on him at this level.

The 2022/23 season was a season of two halves for QPR. Former manager Michael Beale had the R’s at the top of the Championship table in October, and after the incredible job he had done, was approached by Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers which he reportedly turned down. Beale was then offered the Rangers job, which he took, and QPR gradually began to slip down the table. Having once looked at a realistic shot of promotion, the London side found themselves in a relegation scrap at the end of the season, finishing just six points clear of the drop zone.

Dieng was ever-present in goal for the Hoops last season, playing every single minute in the Championship campaign, keeping nine clean sheets in the process. The leaky defence was a huge problem throughout the season, leading to Dieng making 119 saves, the fourth most in the Championship. Dieng also bizarrely won QPR’s goal of the season having come up for a corner and scoring a last-gasp equaliser against Sunderland in August.

Who is Seny Dieng?

The 28-year-old had played for a host of Swiss and German clubs before making the switch to English football in 2016 when jointing QPR. Loans to non-league sides Whitehawk and Hampton and Richmond Borough followed before then being loaned to both Stevenage and Doncaster. Dieng really impressed at both of the latter, leading to him cementing his place as number one at Loftus road mid-way through the 2020/21 season, a position that he has kept ever since. The goalkeeper made his debut for Senegal in March 2021, before then playing in two African Cup of Nations Games replacing Edouard Mendy who was out with COVID-19.

With his market value potentially at it’s highest point currently, QPR should be looking to offload Dieng this summer. They should get a decent amount of money for the Senegalese international, which will greatly help improve other positions on the pitch. Given his contract is up next summer, now is the time to sell and Ainsworth will be wary of that whilst monitoring other options. The R’s will be looking for a far more consistent season than this year and the extra money will be a huge help.
