Peterborough Set To Miss Out On Transfer Windfall

It has been revealed this morning that Luton Town’s deal to sign Joe Taylor from Peterborough United in January did not include a promotion-based clause, according to the Peterborough Telegraph.

Luton swooped for Taylor in January despite the attacker struggling for minutes at the Weston Holmes Stadium. It was a deal that raised a few eyebrows but he has performed well in the Championship after his reported £500,000 move, but despite Peterborough being known for their clever transfer dealings, they didn’t insert a promotion clause.

Who Is Joe Taylor?

Taylor has had a remarkable rise in such a short time after Luton gained promotion to the Premier League on Saturday.

He spent little over a year on the books at Peterborough but not many would have foreseen his step up to the Championship after he struggled to impact Peterborough’s first team and failed to get the goals many had expected.

The Welsh Youth International has displayed potential during his appearances for Luton Town this season. He showed remarkable composure by scoring a penalty after having a goal disallowed in extra time, demonstrating a remarkable level of coolness for someone his age. Once the celebrations subside at Kenilworth Road, he will aspire to elevate his performance to new heights in the Premier League, which will be a massive challenge.

What Does This Mean?

Peterborough United would have hoped for a transfer windfall with Luton’s promotion to the Premier League but it has been revealed that they didn’t enter a promotion clause into the transfer deal.

Promotion clauses are entered into transfer deals to give the selling clubs a potential transfer windfall if the player’s new club achieves promotion, and in this case, Luton did earn promotion on Saturday in the Championship play-off final.

However, with a fee of £500,000 paid upfront, Peterborough may not be too bothered with the lack of a promotion clause, especially considering the player wasn’t impacting their first team at the time of the sale.

I would have expected Peterborough to be clever with their transfer dealings as they normally are but it seems like they’ve missed a beat here by not inserting a promotion clause.

However, having earnt a fee of £500,000 for Taylor, Peterborough probably won’t lose any sleep over this one.
