Wrexham owner Ryan Reynolds is set to have his cash put to the test as the club chase top League One striker Alfie May, as revealed in an exclusive with The Daily & Sunday Express.
The prolific Cheltenham Town forward played what many believe to be his final game on Sunday, where he netted a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Charlton Athletic.
But the Welsh club reportedly face stiff competition from a number of Championship clubs to secure his signature this summer. As many expect the 29-year-old to depart Gloucestershire and could potentially reunite with a former teammate at Wrexham.
There are three other Championship clubs interested in May, one of whom failed with a deadline day move for the forward in January, but it is expected Wrexham could be in the best financial position to acquire May’s signature.
Alfie May
Alfie May came to Whaddon Road in January 2020 from Doncaster Rovers, he was a part of the Cheltenham Town team that won the League Two title and has since become a fan favourite at the club.
Since their arrival in League One, the Robins have been impressive as last season they finished 14th, the highest finish they have ever managed to achieve. And they finished strong this season too, a 2-2 draw with Charlton Athletic on the final day meant the club finished 16th and nine points clear of safety.
Alfie May would net in that final-day fixture, a late equaliser earning them a point and took them to 16th in the League One table, meaning they finished nine points from safety. That goal was May’s 20th of the season, meaning he would reach that tally for the second season in a row.
Potential Reunion
A move to Wrexham could see the English forward reunite with a former teammate and a close friend from his League Two winning campaign.
Ben Tozer left Cheltenham Town in 2021 to join the aspirational project Wrexham had begun in their bid for promotion. And he achieved that goal by leading the team to promotion under Phil Parkinson’s guidance this season as they beat Notts County to the title.
The 33-year-old has become a highly influential figure within the Wrexham squad as he has since been named club captain. In the 2021/22 season, he made 53 appearances for the side, his long throw-ins have been a huge help to the club, as they helped contribute to 12 goals.
Previous Interest.
May has become a highly sought-after talent within the EFL, as many Championship clubs are currently monitoring the striker’s situation with just 12 months remaining on his contract at Whaddon Road.
Many clubs who were chasing the striker in the January transfer window have since continued to monitor his progress since their failed deadline day approaches.
And his performances since January, which include some fantastic goals scored, will have certainly continued to pique their interest and it appears that it is earning the attention of many more as clubs in League One add the striker to their shopping list.
Another club within the Championship that could be playing Premier League football next season in Luton Town have also had their heads turned. May has reportedly left an impression on the club’s Chief of Recruitment as he made regular checks on loan star Glenn Rea.
What’s been said?
Wrexham are still yet to formalise their interest in the striker, but are expected to be in the best financial position to sign the 29-year-old but they do face tough competition in the transfer race.
Championship clubs Huddersfield, Millwall and Birmingham City, who were all interested in January are expected to come back in for the striker this summer, as well as Luton Town could potentially make an offer.
League One and League Two clubs are also circling the striker with Peterborough and Derby interested in the striker as well as links to League Two outfit Gillingham.
Writers View
Alfie May has enjoyed a fantastic time at Cheltenham Town since arriving from Doncaster Rovers and with the forward’s contract coming to a close despite the one-year extension option, it would be wise for the Robins to cash in while they have this chance.
They are not in as strong a financial position as the rest of the clubs in League One and a transfer pursuit that has heated up this much could lead to a bidding war up to a fee that could massively help the club.
With May having arrived for such a small fee, he has surely surpassed what anyone ever expected from him and the club would be wise to cash in and take as a huge profit.
