“You Never Know” – Cheltenham Town’s Talisman Makes Admission About His Future

Alfie May rescued a point at home to Charlton this weekend, with a late goal to secure a draw. However, it was what the Cheltenham striker had to say after the match which has caught the eye of Robins’ fans and fans across the EFL, as per Gloucestershire Live.

It’s the EFL’s worst-kept secret that Alfie May is top of the shopping list for many teams throughout the leagues. Many expect that Sunday’s draw with Charlton would be May’s last game for the Robins.

Now, he can be at the top of the shopping list all he likes; if he is to leave the Completely-Suzuki stadium, there will need to be a fairly substantial bid for his services, as he still has a year left to run on his current deal with the option to extend a year.

With that in mind, Cheltenham don’t have to sell their talisman, but if they keep him, they could end up losing him for free come the end of his contract. A fate I’m sure the Robins would like to avoid.

Why is Alfie May in such high demand?

Well, since joining Cheltenham back in 2020 from Doncaster, he has been somewhat of a star man for the Robins. In 166 games, May has netted on 66 occasions and has a total of 80 goal contributions during his time at Cheltenham.

This season, he has made 54 appearances in all competitions and scored 26 goals. With stats like this, it’s easy to see why he is in such high demand across the EFL.

What has he actually said?

Following his side’s dramatic 2-2 draw with the Addicks on Sunday, May addressed his future at Cheltenham and left the door open for a number of outcomes this summer.

“If that was the last time I ever played for Cheltenham Town, scoring with my last touch was a great feeling, and it’s been a pleasure. I can’t thank everyone at the club enough.”

“There will be a lot of question marks over my future now, but whatever happens, the club knows it’s got a special place in my heart”

“You never know in football, and I would honestly love to finish my career here, but I want that next move.”

He then moves on to discuss his 89th-minute substitution, which he admits was pre-planned ahead of the game with head coach Wade Elliot.

“The gaffer spoke to me, and it was something I wanted; it was my chance to say thank you for the support I’ve been given here.”

Interesting comments from May; I don’t think he has fully ruled out staying at Cheltenham. It’s almost like he wanted to make sure that if he is to leave this summer, he has said thank you and goodbye in the right way to the fans.

It’s easy to see why he is top of the list for a number of clubs throughout the EFL, I can’t see where he is going to end up with all the rumours flying around, but I don’t see him staying at Cheltenham for another season.

Many are suggesting that he is going to drop back down to League Two again; if that is to happen, I’d love to see him come to my club, Gillingham; as a local lad, it would seem a match made in heaven, but it will be no easy coup for the Kent club.

The Gills are said to be among a number of clubs, set to fight it out for his signature this summer.
