Swindon Town head coach Jody Morris had admitted Jonny Williams’s future with the club is up in the air, after speaking to the Swindon Advertiser.
The 29-year-old headlines a list of players whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the season, and with no movement on a new contract, Williams’s future at Swindon is becoming blurry.
Who is Jonny Williams?
Williams joined Swindon on a free transfer last Summer as one of the staple signings under the new ownership of Clem Morfuni. With experience playing in the Premier League, Championship and for the Wales National team, the midfielder has been a crucial player for the Robins over the last two seasons.
Making 37 appearances in the league this campaign, Williams has 10 goals and two assists for a Swindon team that will be disappointed with how the year has gone.
Can Swindon Afford To Lose Him?
Playing on the left side as a midfielder or sometimes further forward, Williams has been an important player for the Town. He was their biggest signing last season when the club was going through a tough situation and has lived up to the hype in his two seasons in League Two.
Swindon was reluctant to let him leave this past January transfer window and would like to extend his time with the club. With plenty of bodies in the midfield and the club’s ambition in the transfer window, finding a replacement would be possible, however none may match the quality of the Welshman.
Is A Move To Scotland On the Cards?
It was no secret that Scottish Premiership side Hibernian were heavily interested in the player during the Winter transfer window, and they may get a second chance in the upcoming months.
Over the last year, we have seen flocks of EFL players make the travel up North to play in Scotland’s top division, and I imagine there’s an opportunity for Williams to follow in those footsteps.
What’s Been Said:
Speaking to the Swindon Advertiser ahead of the clash with Stevenage on Tuesday evening, Morris spoke about his player’s future.
“I had a bit of a chat with Jonny about his future. I spoke with Jonny quite a lot [on deadline day], but without going into detail, I think Jonny has got to make the best decision for him and where he’s at in his career at the moment.
“I like Jonny, I’ve spoken with Jonny, but whether there’s anything to be done there or not, I’m not too sure.
“But looking at what we’re doing next year is obviously extremely important. There are conversations that need to be had and that are going on this week, but those conversations probably need to speed up a little bit.”
Writer’s View
With how Swindon’s year has gone, the club feels full of uncertainty heading into the off-season. Williams is just one of many that Swindon will be wanting to keep, however it’s difficult to see him staying.
Unless Morris can convince him of his project and future plans with the club, better and more stable opportunities will likely be out there for Williams to seek.
