With the season coming to a close and attention starting to turn towards the next campaign, Liverpool icon Robbie Fowler could be in line for the manager’s job at League Two side Tranmere Rovers, according to reports from The Sun.
The Superwhites have been without a manager since the departure of Micky Mellon in mid-March, after a poor run of form found them slip to 14th in the league.
In his place, Ian Dawes has stepped in as interim manager until the end of the season, finding moderate success in a lost year.
However, with the search for a new permanent manager in the works, the former Premier League star could be on the sidelines for Rovers next season.
Most famous for his footballing abilities as an ex-player for boyhood club Liverpool, Fowler had an impressive career racking up 126 goals for the Reds and making 26 caps for the England National team.
After finishing up his playing career in Thailand, the 48-year-old’s managerial experience has all come from that part of the world. Managing in Thailand, Australia and India, Fowler has only been in charge of 57 games across his past three jobs, with a win percentage of 32%.
A step up to League Two would be a big jump for the local hero, however, it’s one he seems willing to make.
15 points off the playoff place in 11th place, Tranmere have two games remaining in the season before they can start looking towards new management for the next campaign.

There’s no denying Fowler was a tremulous player in his day, but we are yet to see him be that as a manager. In his fairness, he hasn’t been given a proper shot at a known manager role yet and with Tranmere’s ties to Liverpool, it could be a good place to start.
Ultimately, hiring Fowler will depend on whether Tranmere is looking for a well-experienced manager or a gamble on a high-profile ex-player.
