Gillingham boss Neil Harris has today confirmed that the club have discussed contract terms with centre back Max Ehmer.
Ehmer has become a mainstay of the Gillingham defence over the years, making 350 appearances for the Kent club over his two stints.
After initially coming in on loan from QPR back in 2014, Ehmer made his stay permanent and stayed with the club until the start of the 2020/2021 season. Which saw the German head to Bristol Rovers, before rejoining the Gills in 2021.
This season, Ehmer has been ever present in the Gillingham back-line making 40 appearances in the league so far this season.
He made his 350th Gillingham appearance against Northampton on Easter Monday and sits 14th in the all time appearances list for the club.
Speaking with BBC Sport Kent manager Neil Harris confirmed the club had “discussed” a new contract with the defender.
“A new contract has been talked about. I like working with Max. Watch this space”
Harris has also said “there’s no reason why Max (Ehmer) can’t go past 400 games for the club.”
The centre half had this to say on his achievement when speaking with Kent Sports News.
“I didn’t really think about being at one club so long when I was growing up to be honest, you aim to be a professional footballer and before you know it, you just want your debut, and then ten games, then twenty and so on.”
“I still want to keep going – I’d love to make four hundred games for Gillingham – and I know when I get there, I’ll want to get to five hundred hopefully!”
Setting his sights on his next target of 400 games for the Kent club, he also goes on to discuss catching Gillingham Head of Recruitment Andy Hessenthaler’s appearance total of 363 for the Gills.
“I know that Hessie is just ahead of me, I want to catch him! Some of those on the list I don’t know being from an “older generation”. I do take it game by game – if I get to Hessie, I get to Hessie, and if I get above him then I get above that, then great.”
Saturday sees Gillingham welcome promotion chasing Stockport to Priestfield, a game that could see the German moved to 351 appearances. One game closer to catching Hessenthaler.

Ehmer has been fantastic this season for Gillingham, for me he is one of the most underrated players at the club if not in the league.
Although he has been known to have an error in him, for the most part, he is one of the club’s most consistent performers and has been fantastic over the years.
I certainly hope the club can come to an agreement with him to keep him at Priestfield, with his sights firmly set on hitting 400 games for the club.
