Portsmouth defender Clark Robertson has recently returned from injury for Pompey, however, with his contract expiring at the end of the season, the Scotsman is still unsure of what the future holds for him.
The 29-year-old has spent the last season and a half at Fratton Park, but due to unfortunate injuries, the defender has only started 37 games in that time.
Robertson has just returned from injury, with back-to-back appearances off the bench during the last two weekends.
Still building up fitness from his injury in late December which saw him out of action for over two months, the former Blackpool man is looking to finish the season strong and remain healthy for the last eight games of the season.
Slotting in as the left-sided centre-back in a back-three, Robertson has yet to start a game under recently appointed manager John Mousinho. However, with his fitness growing and a push needed to get into the promotion hunt, the defender is hoping to feature more down the final stretch of the season.
With Pompey having an eye for promotion back to the Championship, they currently sit in ninth place, six points away from the playoff places. With strong challengers in the mix, a solid finish to the season will be needed, especially with their goal difference of nine being significantly lower than the teams around them.
Speaking after a 2-2 draw with Port Vale on Saturday, to BBC Radio Solent Sports. Robertson spoke about returning from his injury and was asked if any conversations had been discussed with his contract running up at the end of the season.
He said: “I’ve not really thought about it too much too be honest with you, I’m back fully fit now and the main aim is to stay fit between now and the end of the season.
“It’s always up in the air when you’re coming to the end of your contract, especially lower down the leagues. You just don’t know what’s going to happen, what will be will be.
“It’s been a tough few months for me, it’s not even physical it’s mentality trying to get sharp again and I felt better today for having the 65 minutes on Tuesday night. It’s just all about building up my sharpness physically and mentality.
“It doesn’t get any easier, it’s just one of those things in football where you just need to get on with it and I think I’m mentally strong to deal with these things. Like I said, I’ve been there enough now where I know what’s expected of me when I’m injured and just had to be patient.”
Writer’s View
It should be said, Robertson still looks to have the talent to play at the top end of League One or even the Championship, but injuries have seemed to hold him back throughout his career. For reference, the last time he started over 30 league games was back in the 2017/18 season.
With the defender also not featuring under the new boss due to being on the sidelines, it will be hard to know whether he is wanted by the club or not.
If I had to guess, I see the two sides separating. We’ve started to see a trend of Football League players moving up north to the Scottish Premiership, and I see that as being a good fit for Robertson if things don’t work out for him at Pompey during the next few months.
