Hartlepool Boss Praises January Signing

Hartlepool boss John Askey has praised January signing Connor Jennings after his 81st-minute equaliser against league leaders Leyton Orient.

Jennings linked up with former boss John Askey, after joining the Pools on deadline day in January. The pair had previously worked together at Macclesfield Town.

The 31 year old forward has made 10 appearances and scored 2 goals for relegation-threatened Hartlepool, since joining from fellow League Two side Stockport County, after a loan spell with National League outfit Altrincham at the start of the season.

Speaking to Hartlepool Mail, Askey has praised his striker following this weekend’s 1-1 draw with league leaders Leyton Orient.

“He gives everything every time he plays, he deserved to get his goal”

“His all-round play is terrific, he brings other people into the game, he works hard to close down and that’s what you need. We need that from all players between now and the end of the season and if they do that we can’t ask any more of them and I’m sure the supporters appreciate the effort they are putting in”

“I’m sure, as a supporter, that’s all you can ask for. If there’s a little bit of a lack of ability there might be a little bit of a lack of ability, but you can always run about and have a go and I think the players are doing that”

Askey putting the message across, that giving your all and having a go is the minimum you can do for the team, even if you aren’t as technically gifted as the next person.

The Pools currently sit 23rd in League Two, which means they occupy one of the two relegation spots, they currently find themselves 4 points behind Crawley Town in 22nd and 5 points behind Colchester in 21st, however, Crawley have a game in hand on both sides.

The fight has certainly been on in recent weeks, with the Pools unbeaten in their last five games, albeit five draws but it has still put some valuable points on the board.

It is tight at both ends of the table and it’s set to be a real fight on either side of the coin for both survival and promotion.

It’s certainly always nice to get praise from your boss, I’m sure Connor Jennings is no different and appreciates the kind words from his manager.

I really like Askey’s comments about effort and running around, it is a minimum that all football fans expect from players, to give their all for the shirt.

The bare minimum you can give as a player is putting in the hard work.

It should be be a very exciting end to the season on both ends of the table, I do fear for the Pools safety if they can’t start turning these draws into wins but a point is a point.
