Plymouth Argyle And Ipswich Town Eyeing Up Move For Highly-Rated League Two Midfielder

Plymouth Argyle and Ipswich Town are both reportedly interested in making a move to sign Salford City midfielder Elliot Watt, according to Football League World.

As well as both the Pilgrims and the Tractor boys are interested in securing the services of the 23-year-old, it is also understood that there is interest in Watt amongst clubs in the Scottish Premiership who are keeping close tabs on the midfielder.

The former Wolves midfielder won’t be cheap to sign either as Salford currently have the luxury of Watt being contracted at the club until 2024 but even with that, there are sides higher up in the EFL that have declared an interest in signing the 23-year-old.

Watt, who was born in Preston but represents Scotland, has had a standout season at the Peninsula Stadium after moving to the club from fellow League Two side, Bradford City in the summer and has gone on to make 33 appearances for the Ammies in all competitions, notching up an impressive 14 assists in the process.

The midfielder’s contribution to Neil Wood’s side sees Salford currently lying seventh in the League Two places and sitting in the final play-off place, with the club sitting seven points behind Stevenage in the automatic promotion places, as they occupy third.

Watt has also previously played for Carlisle United in League Two whilst on a six-month loan from Wolves, with Bradford quickly making a permanent move following an impressive short stint at Brunton Park, in which he made 96 appearances for the Bantams, going on to score five and assisting five during his time at the University of Bradford Stadium.

Elliot Watt is for me, one of the best midfielders in League Two and in terms of passing stats in particular, he is by far and away the best the fourth division has to offer. The stats don’t lie.

I’m not surprised there is interest from higher up in the Football League pyramid as he is a player that is destined to play at a higher level and with Watt only being 23-23 years olde has every chance he can have a successful career at a club in a higher division.

As already mentioned in this article however, securing his services won’t be easy by any means as Watt is contracted with Salford until the end of the 2023/24 season so any potential move for Watt this summer may come with a big price tag.

As for Salford, I’m sure they’d like to retain Watt’s services heading into next season as the club continue their quest for promotion to League One but could let the midfielder go if they was to get a suitable offer in the summer.
