Ipswich Town Midfielder Reveals Uncertainty On His Future

Current Ipswich Town midfielder Massimo Luongo is unsure about his future at the club despite only joining in the January transfer window, after speaking on BBC Radio Suffolk.

The Australian international has just started to play regular football again after a slow year, earning starts in back-to-back games for the Tractor Boys.

The 30-year-old joined the promotion-pushing League One side two months ago after an unsuccessful spell at Middlesbrough during the first half of the season. Luongo joined Boro in the Summer but never made an appearance for the Championship team.

Luongo is no stranger to the Football League after spending the last 11 years playing for the likes of Swindon Town, QPR and Sheffield Wednesday.

Starting his career in the Tottenham academy, Luongo had a short loan at Ipswich back when he was a teenager, but started to make a name for himself at Swindon. He was part of the Robins team that narrowly missed out on promotion to the Championship after a 4-0 loss to Preston in a play-off final, he still got a move to the division when he joined QPR for a fee of around £4,000,000.

The experienced midfielder spent the next six seasons playing in the Championship with Rangers and the Owls, before he rejected a new contract with Wednesday in the Summer and moved on.

Now the man of the moment at Ipswich, Luongo says he’s relaxed about what the future holds and is still enjoying his football.

Speaking on the radio show Luongo said: “The future isn’t something I have thought about or spoken to anyone about – we just take it as it comes. In the last few years, I’ve always been in the last year (of contracts) and the more you think about it the more it stresses you out.

“I just need to be here, be in the moment. I’m enjoying playing and that’s all I can do. If it happens, it happens but if not then I will go and do it somewhere else.

“I want to play until my body doesn’t let me anymore, so hopefully I have a few more years left in me.”

Writer’s View

The Australian midfielder still looks like a very capable player for League One sides and I wouldn’t see this as worrying news if your an Ipswich fan.

Luongo very much seems to be enjoying his time in Norfolk and with wins in both the games he has started, Ipswich will be enjoying what they see as well.

It very much seems Luongo is open to most ideas and will play his hand when he can sit down and look at all his options. Being a free agent gives the player more power when it comes to picking his next team, and it very much seems Luongo is content with being able to control his destiny.
