With the season reaching its climax, teams with games in hand have begun to fit them into their busy schedules, leaving fans trying to work out exactly where their team will finish in the league. With each game that passes, chances to stay in the league shrink and for some fans, so do their hopes.
The Lower League Look have lined up the bottom 5 in League Two and taken a closer look at their next 6 games to compare where each team could be expected to finish. Each club has had one fan representative give their predictions on wins/losses and draws. For some teams, you could question the optimism, but for others, you really can’t argue with the most likely outcomes. If you’re a fan of cartoon monkeys that we still don’t quite understand, you might want to look away.
Colchester – Currently 20th.
Starting first with Colchester who currently sits 20th in the league, with 35 points from their 35 games played. We spoke to Si, an avid U’s fan travelling home and away who has seen his team turn around a potentially torrid season. From winning just 4 of their opening 23 games the club has now won 5 of their 12 games since the new year, giving their fans new hope and optimism as the season heads to its climax. Can new manager Ben Garner continue the upturn in form?
Our Colchester fan is predicting 11 points from a possible 18 which includes a point away at the runaway league leader, Leyton Orient.
Si’s thoughts;
Gillingham – Currently 21st.
Next up is Gillingham, 21st in League Two shows just how poor the club was before Brad Gallinson came along in December. Almost everyone who has played the Gills since has had the same opinions – This is not a team that should be in 21st. January couldn’t come quick enough and saw Neil Harris add no less than 10 players into their ranks including Tom Nichols from relegation rivals Crawley Town (NFT! NFT! NFT!). We reached out to the Gills fan channel and blogger Matt from GillsInTheBlood for his thoughts on the upcoming games.
A similar feeling in the Gills camp as Colchester, with a predicted 11 points from 18 with the only loss coming against high-flying Carlisle at home.
Matts thoughts;
Hartlepool United – Currently 22nd.
One place outside the relegation zone sit Hartlepool United, but having played 2 games more than Crawley Town who sits below them, and with a worse goal difference that could come into play, you could say their position is potentially a false one. The club have only two wins in the last ten, which came against rock bottom Rochdale and everyone’s favourite Yo-Yo club Doncaster Rovers. Poolies are looking over their shoulder to see if Crawley can overturn the 3 points difference needed to catch them up. They have appointed their third manager of the season in John Askey, is what many believe to be the best move of the season so far. But is it enough?
Lower League Look co-host and lifelong Poolie Grant took the challenge of guessing the next 6 results, and went for the actual definition of “a mixed bag”. 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses. Now is that a shock? No, but when you see that one of the wins comes this weekend against 4th place Northampton, you start to wonder if there’s something in the water in Scotland that we just don’t get down in England. (Editors note: from personal experience it’s definitely Scotch)
Grant’s thoughts;
Crawley – Currently 23rd.
This is where it gets bleak. Because not only are we into the relegation zone, we’re looking at a team here that infamously tweeted “Do they let you skip League 1 if you go undefeated in League 2?” before the season started. Was this meant as a joke? Absolutely. Is the joke now blowing up in Wagmi United’s faces? You bet. Is it still funny every time I see it? Without a doubt.
6 losses in a row, 3 goals scored and 13 conceded is what Crawley fans have been treated to. Couple that with only 1 win in 10 and you see Crawley drop right into the relegation fight. A season that promised so much has only delivered anger and frustration for the fans. Where do you start with Crawley? That’s probably a different article for Ryan Whelan to put together at the end of the season, but my word this isn’t fun anymore. (Editors note: I genuinely think that would be one of my longest articles, Liam’s right it is something I will have to write up. It’s horrible for the fans to see the club in this state. I think most would take relegation now if it meant Wagmi going, but they’ll hang on as long as humanly possible. I can’t see them respecting the national league too there’s some dangerous well organised clubs down there, I’m worried for the fans.)
We had a chat with Matt Addinall, someone who throughout this season we’ve clashed with ourselves when it’s come to Wagmi and Crawley, but someone who has been there since day one and has seen what we perhaps haven’t. Brace yourselves, because Matts’s predictions are horrible and as bad as they are, it’s really hard to question his picks.
0 wins in 12 once this run is over is the prediction, and only 2 points were gained against Doncaster and Grimsby. Perhaps the most damning result is Rochdale who sits just below them taking all 3 points.
Matt was asked to give us a summary of why he went with the predictions he did and he simply said; “A manager that’s run out of ideas and a squad of players that on the whole look like that have already accepted their fate”.
Rochdale – Currently 24th.
Here we are, we’ve arrived at what is known as the “rock bottom” of the EFL. It’s the position that no one wants to be in but unfortunately, it’s the position someone always has to fill. Scunthorpe last season went out without a whimper and up until last week, I think the entire league felt Rochdale were about to do the same. A shock 2-0 demolition of then 2nd place Stevenage has seen Dale put an end to a winless run stretching back 9 games, and has given them only their 2nd win since the 15th of October.
Rochdale’s Her Game Too advocate Charlotte has been hit with a renewed sense of optimism heading into the next 6 games, and Charlotte is predicting 7 points from the possible 18 up for grabs. Wins against F.A Cup hopefuls Grimsby and the team directly above them, Crawley will see a side that many had written off put up a fight that no one expected.
Charlotte’s thoughts;
The Impact On The League.
So there we have the predictions, but what would that do to the bottom 5 in terms of the table? We know that other teams could drop into the mix but based on just these 5 there is very little movement if these results happen the way they’ve been predicted. Only Rochdale lifting themselves off of the bottom and sinking Crawley would leave what many I’m sure would see as too big of a job to be done by Scott Lindsey’s men to stay up. Rochdale and Hartlepool would then battle it out for that last safety spot with Pools feeling the more confident of the 2 teams.
