Charlton Athletic Dealt Blow From Ben Garner’s Right Hand Man

Just before a tough away day’s trip to 2nd in the league Plymouth, Charlton has announced the departure of Assistant Coach Scott Marshall. The club have confirmed he will be leaving his role immediately.

Marshall arrived at the East London club in June 2022, working with previous Addicks manager Ben Garner. The new Colchester manager was fired from his role in early December however Marshall stayed on in his position when Dean Holden was appointed in the following weeks.

The 49-year-old is a former player and started his youth career through the Arsenal academy. He would go into break into the Arsenal team at the age of 19 and was voted Arsenal’s Young Player of the Year in the 1995/96 season.

After finishing up his playing career, Marshall turned to coaching where he has been a caretaker manager for periods with Aston Villa and Reading.

Marshall then joined up with Garner at Swindon for the 2021/22 season, and the club went on to reach the playoffs before losing on penalties to eventual winners Port Vale.

That led Marshall to his position at Charlton after following Garner to the capital city.

Charlton manager Holden spoke on Marshall’s departure, saying: “Scott spoke with me and explained he wanted to move on. I wasn’t going to stand in his way.

“I’ve come in on my own and assessed all the staff. It now gives us the opportunity to potentially look to bring in another member of staff in, whether that’s now or at the end of the season.

“We wish Scott well. He’s been brilliant both on and off the pitch since I’ve come to the club and we wish him well.”

Writer’s View

Marshall has a very impressive footballing CV with the clubs he’s played for and has followed that on during his time coaching.

He’s gone up the ranks from a youth coach to a developmental squad manager and now to an assistant manager before leaving his role.

The timing of Marshall’s departure is out of the ordinary, however, in pure speculation it is convenient he leaves his role at Charlton just when Garner got himself a new gig with Colchester. So don’t be surprised in the following days if Marshall ends up there.
