Former Portsmouth Manager ‘Leading Candidate’ For Newly Vacant Job

As the dominos begin to fall due to QPR’s hire of Gareth Ainsworth, former Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley is a leading candidate for the vacant Colchester job, according to Pete O’Rourke from Football Insider.

Colchester United have been forced to begin a new managerial search following Matt Bloomfield’s departure to League One side Wycombe Wanderers.

The U’s are currently the odd ones out as the managerial dominos effect has kicked into full gear, with former Championship manager Danny Cowley reportedly the top contender for the role.

Cowley was most recently in charge of Portsmouth before he was sacked on New Year’s Day, after a 3-1 defeat to Charlton which saw them drop to 12th in League One and without a win in nine games.

The former midfielder got his first gig as a manager in the Football League when he guided Lincoln to promotion in 2016. In that same Championship winning season, Cowley led Lincoln to become the first non-league club to reach the quarter-final of the FA Cup.

It didn’t take long for the 44-year-old to continue winning ways when he got the Imps a second promotion in three years to League One.

Now, Cowley has been out of a job for close to two months and after speaking on the EFL Highlights show back on the 4th of February, Cowley said “will have to wait and see” about a potential return to management.

Colchester currently occupies 19th in League Two with a reasonable nine-point gap from the drop zone. Losing Bloomfield will be a massive loss for the side as since his appointment in October, he had slowly started to turn things around.

But one man’s loss is another man’s treasure and the link to Danny Cowley should be exciting for fans.

Cowley has had a few less desirable years at Huddersfield Town and Portsmouth, but his bread and butter has come during his time in League Two.

His best years as a manager came with Lincoln around this level, it just depends on whether he is willing to drop that far again.

Colchester will need to make the appointment swiftly due to a relegation fight potentially being on their hands, and if Cowley is up for the challenge, it would be a great hire for the club.
