Sheffield Wednesday Join The Race For Championship Defender.

League One Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly joined the race for Watford defender Mattie Pollock, according to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke.

Two League One clubs in Burton Albion and Exeter City have made approaches for the Hornets man, while four others, which include the Owls, are weighing up a move. Pollock joined the Hornets in 2021 after making his way through Grimsby Town’s side.

The 21-year-old chose to stay and fight for his place at Watford this summer over a move to Scottish top-flight side Hibernian, but it has proven difficult for him, having made only four appearances this season, this was his first appearance for the club since October.

The club are happy to loan out the young defender to continue his development, as it has been a struggle for him to break ahead of the established defenders at the club such as Craig Cathcart, making his fourth appearance against Reading in their FA Cup fourth round.

Pollock has League One experience, having spent last season on loan with Gloucestershire based side Cheltenham Town, and his performances during his time there show why so many clubs desire him.

Our Verdict

Pollock has a promising future ahead of him but for now, it does not look like he will get ahead of the three established names the club has in defence. With that being said, given the age of those centre backs, you can imagine there is still a future for the 21-year-old at Watford.

With League One experience, many clubs chasing him will be hoping to see the form he showed last season, where he made 39 appearances scoring three and providing the assists for two. His ability was put on show in a stellar display from him for most of the season, as he was part of a Cheltenham team that finished comfortably in mid table.

One club seeking his signature could be his most favoured destination as he could see him linking up at Barnsley with former Cheltenham Town manager Michael Duff. With Duff the man who brought Pollock to Whaddon Road last season, it is clear he would be eager for a chance to have the defender in his team once again.

Wednesday fans, how do you feel about the potential signing of Pollock?
