Barnsley and Colchester United are reportedly trying to hijack Newport County’s deal for Irish youngster Kian Corbally, according to Irish Mirror.
19-year-old midfielder Corbally currently plays for St. Patricks Athletic in the Irish Premier League and has appeared a few times for them this season after impressing on loan at Longford Town last term. He has also been capped for Ireland under 19’s playing five games at youth level for his country. He is also St Pat’s youngest-ever scorer when he put the ball in the net at just 15.
The youngster was set to train with League Two club Newport County earlier in the week, but his flight was cancelled. His visit to Wales will now be on Sunday 8th of January, but nothing is truly set in stone as he will only attend a training session.
Colchester United are one of the clubs looking to hijack the potential deal after having a very successful January window so far, making four signings to show real ambition for rest of the campaign. Taking away from another league rival whilst adding to their squad would be an excellent move.
Barnsley are attempting a straight return back into the championship this season, and game time for Corbally isn’t as guaranteed as his other options.

I think Corbally is a great option for Barnsley but a superb capture if either League Two clubs could get his signature. Newport seem to lead the race as he is set to link up with them soon, but who can predict football transfers? Both Colchester and Barnsley have a chance and will take it if the opportunity comes about.
Colchester need to strengthen in central midfield after Matty Longstaff’s loan ended at the beginning of the window. Although the deal could unsettle current loanees like Charlie Ownes.
Barnsley already have strong midfielders like former Bolton Wanderers player Luca Connell. Meaning Corbally would have stiff competition in terms of a place in the starting 11.
