Exeter City are battling with Mansfield Town and Colchester United for the signature of Bristol Rovers defender Alfie Kilgour according to BristolLive.
Kilgour who plays as a centre-back for Joey Barton’s side has found first-team appearances hard to come by this season. He has only appeared in 8 league games, and with his contract expiring in the summer it has prompted several clubs to be on alert. Exeter City are joined by League Two clubs Mansfield Town and Colchester United in showing an early interest in the defender.
The defender signed his first professional contract with Rovers in 2016 at the age of 18 after joining their academy at the age of 8. Since then he’s been on two loans to both Hungerford and Maidenhead United respectively when he returned the Gas gave him the opportunity at his boyhood club in the 18/19 season. Kilgour became a vital component in the side and continued to be a mainstay on the team sheet. This season, however, the defender has found game time hard to come by in Joey Barton’s return to League One.
The Grecians sit in 10th place in League One, potentially looking for a second-half of-the season playoff push, only sitting six points behind sixth-place Barnsley. Colchester, meanwhile, have already been active in the window confirming Ryan Whelan’s exclusive story in The Real EFL that Arthur Read would be joining the club from fellow league two side Stevenage this week. They are looking to ensure league status for next season as their rivals around them also look to strengthen.

Mansfield will be looking to cling onto the final playoff spot with the need for quality reinforcements. The Stags have often been there or thereabouts and will be looking to go that one step further and gain promotion to League One.

In my opinion, Kilgour would be a good addition for all 3 clubs but especially for Colchester as they are struggling in League Two at the time of writing. On the other hand, he could be useful for League One Exeter as he is a strong, tough defender who thrives in the air.

Colchester do seem to be splashing out quite a bit this month, but think the main issues there are not solved (which IMO are the lack of experience in the coaching set up and an owner who antagonises fans)
