Swindon Town manager Richie Wellens is set to turn his back on the Robins and move to Salford City, according to reports.
Wellens oversaw Swindon’s promotion from League Two last season, but seemed unhappy earlier in this campaign when claiming his side needed more signings. The Robins have had a tough start to life back in the third-tier, currently sitting just outside the bottom four, although they have played two games fewer than the teams above them.
Salford City are looking for a new boss after getting rid of Graham Alexander earlier in the season. The Ammies are currently ninth in the table, but with a game in hand which could see them move as high as third. They have been in the capable hands of former Manchester United midfielder Paul scholes, but only ever on a temporary basis.
Wellens began his playing career as a youth at Manchster United, but made his name at Blackpool before spells with Doncaster and Oldham. He then appeared for Leicester City in the Championship, before another spell with Doncaster. He has managed Oldham, with whom he had two stints as a player, as well as Swindon.
It is believed he will be absent from Swindon’s League One clash this evening with Plymouth whilst the loose ends are tied up on his Salford City move. Fans have been quick to pass comment on the apparent decision to leave the County Ground, as you’ll see below.

Always gonna be very very hard for Wellens to turn that job down. Geographically it works perfectly, the lure of the Class of 92 will be a big pull to a massive Man Utd fan,and they have ambition which they can back with cash.Shit luck for us,but it's a perfect storm ? #stfc

Thing that gets me. He’s a manager that can manage in the championship. The highest Salford can realistically achieve is league one status. Which is where we are at

I think if there were fans in the ground, no lockdowns etc… Wellens would have stayed. Two weeks on your tod in an apartment or whatever he has with no family and everyone being miles away under different restrictions? Yeah. Can't blame him #stfc

If Wellens goes to Salford ill be so disappointed in him, thought he had ambition? #stfc

Salford literally have more ambition than us jo, let’s be honest we’re fucked. I’d be disappointed but don’t blame him in the slightest, makes complete sense from his point of view

Probably didnt get the support he wanted, I'd also imagine a big part of it is due to his location.

Does a good job with Swindon. a championship club picks him up. This season he’s looking forward to clashes with Harrogate & Barrow

I don't know if that's happened in this case
Wellens seems to have integrity.
Salford, who knows.Just hope it's sorted quickly one way or the other.
