Portsmouth close in one 21-year-old Premier League prospect

Portsmouth and Oxford are two clubs looking to take Wolves striker Niall Ennis on loan, according to Football Insider.

Pompey are known to be hunting additions to their squad and are reported to already be in negotiations, along with early strugglers Oxford United.

The youngster came through the ranks at Wolves to be capped by England at Under-19, Under-18s and Under-17s levels. He enjoyed a loan spell at Shrewsbury in 2017/18 but made only two outings for Salop before a serious knee injury forced his return to Molineux.

He spent the last campaign on loan at Doncaster Rovers, where he scored six times, and provider four assists in 29 appearances. With his current deal expiring, he is in talks for an extension ahead of making another move to the third-tier.
Portsmouth lifted themselves to 11th in the table this weekend with their first win of the season against Burton Albion, whilst last season’s beaten play-off finalists Oxford have started poorly, with one win from their opening three fixtures. They do have a game in hand though, having lost their game with Crewe due to coronavirus concerns.

Our View

Ennis showed glimpses of what he could do at Doncaster last season, but six goals in 29 appearances is not a huge impact.

However, he does have a wicked turn of pace and a year of senior experience could well have seen him improve in the key areas that held him back last season. He looked to be bullied a little at times, but with more experience comes improved strength too.

Both Oxford and Pompey need a boost up front, offering competition for their current strikers, as they look to shake off the slow starts they have both endured.
