‘Terrible news for us’ – These Southend fans react to latest club announcement

Southend United’s Elvis Bwomono has received a call-up to the Ugandan national side, but it isn’t being welcomed by all Blues fans.

The exciting young right-back has appeared 79 times for Southend in the league, and at only 21-years-old has established himself as a key man for Mark Moseley as they look to find a way out of League Two.

Bwomono, who made news this weekend after being sick on the pitch, has flown out to Dubai for a 10-day training camp meaning he will miss Southend’s next two fixtures against Portsmouth in the EFL Trophy, and Exeter City. He returns to the club on October 13th.

It isn’t the first time the young defender has been called up, but his first spell was cancelled in March after Covid took hold. Uganda are not in action during this spell, but he will be looking to put himself in contention for the Africa Nations Cup 2021 qualifier double-header against South Sudan in November.

“It’s a proud honour for me and especially my family,” Bwomono told Southend’s official club site.

“Growing up as a kid you want to put a smile on the face of your parents, and this is something that I wanted to do for myself and them.”

The Shrimpers have started this season in the same vein as they finished the last, with just one point from their opening four games. Only Grimsby Town are keeping them off the bottom, with the Mariners having played a game less this season after losing their clash with Bradford as a result of a Covid scare.

Southend fans will be sad to see their right-back missing, especially for the crucial tie with Exeter City in sixth place. Even though they’re clearly delighted for their player, there is a feeling amongst some supporters he will be miss.
