‘Cursed’, ‘There’s always something’ – These Sunderland fans react to key moment from 0-0 draw

Sunderland grabbed a point against Charlton Athletic yesterday, finishing the game with ten men following Tom Flanagan’s sending off.

Phil Parkinson’s side were left frustrated though after failing to capitalise on an impressive first half with a glut of chances going begging.

Danny Graham’s effort was bravely blocked by former Nottingham Forest midfielder Ben Watson, before the same players lashed a shot high over the goal from five yards following Josh Scowen’s pinpoint cross.

Into the second half, academy graduate Lynden Gooch shot over before a late turning point. Defender Tom Flanagan cynically stopped Conor Washington’s run and was shown a red card for a professional foul. The pendulum then swung in the way of the visitors, who should have snatched an unlikely victory through Chuks Aneke, who wasted his chance.

The Black Cats are fourth in the table, but already four points adrift of the top two in their hunt for automatic promotion. Whilst it is a position many would be thankful for, even at this early stage, Black Cats fans were not entirely happy with the manner in which they failed to win the game.

Flanagan’s dismissal brought a raft of negative comments, even before the game as finished, many of which hint at major dissatisfaction with current performances, even if the league position looks strong.
