Oldham Athletic’s long-suffering fans have been dealt another blow today as two players leave the club under mysterious circumstances.
The circus at Oldham is one some outsiders may find tough to understand. Former defender Anthony Gerrard openly discussed the issue he had with the owner on the excellent Undr The Cosh podcast earlier this year, and once again fans have been left scratching their heads as a key figure leaves.
David Wheater had a long and distinguished career with Bolton Wanderers, as well as appearing in the Premier League with Middlesbrough. He should be a key part of the struggling Latics squad, instead he has been cast aside along with keeper Gary Woods. Frustratingly for fans, they are none the wiser as to why.
“Oldham Athletic can confirm that players David Wheater and Gary Woods will no longer be a part of the First Team squad,” the official statement read. “Due to matters that neither party is in a position to disclose, the decision has been made to ensure the football club can now focus on the season ahead. No further comment will be made by the club at this time.”
The decision comes at a time when Oldham are struggling for form, having been beaten three times in a row, without scoring a goal. They lost their opening League Two fixture, going down 1-0 against Leyton Orient. That was followed by a 1-0 defeat against Morecambe in the League Cup, a result that cost the Latics a home tie against Newcastle.
This weekend it was Stevenage, only in the Football league due to a reprieve after finishing bottom last season, that handed out a thrashing. They won convincingly, 3-0, leaving Oldham pointless and 22nd in the table.
The constant turnover of managers, the player departures and the owner’s unpopular reign have all seemingly left these supporters right on the edge when it comes to their beloved club.

What an absolute shambles. The team is leaking goals and our best defender is frozen out. This club is a joke. I know you won't read the replies so it won't matter. When we are allowed fans back in, there won't be anyone who wants to come.

Thank you for repeatedly justifying my decision not to buy a season ticket. Been going since the early 80s but won't be stepping foot in the ground again until the parasites have gone. Club I supported doesn't exist any more.

Disgusting. Give them their money. Wheater especially is a player we are in desperate need of at the minute. #oafc

This is a ridiculous statement. Doesn’t tell us anything really. We know they’re not part of the first as not being picked. Just leaves many questions, why what’s happened? are we looking to sell/move them on?

Anyone supporting these clowns now is fully part of the problem. Don't give the wankers a penny, get refunds where you can. Time for @PTB_OAFC to step in and do what the trust should have been doing for the last year. Action needed #oafc

We used to be a good family club who took pride in looking out for the town, players and the fans, we are now nothing short of a disgrace, my club is gone

A player that was a positive last season at centre half with piergianni. Keeping him improves us. Shows how little they care about the team and ultimately the club. Fuck off.
