Sunderland and Hull come together in the first round of the Carabao Cup, the most eye-catching fixture of the first round.
Just three years ago, the two met in the Premier League with the likes of Andy Robertson, Harry Maguire, Jermaine Defoe and Jordan Pickford littering the teams. On September 5th, they’ll meet as two third-tier teams with fans who are expecting little from their fallen giants.
Hull were relegated after a horrible finish to their Championship season, whilst Sunderland fans expect little after missing out on the play-offs last year under former Tigers boss Phil Parkinson. Both sides have seen better days and neither sets of fans will be particularly excited by the prospect of even appearing in the first round.
Hull were last eliminated at this stage back in 2011, losing 2-0 at home to Macclesfield Town. Sunderland suffered the ignominy of defeat at this stage in 2018/19, but were vanquished by Championship side Sheffield Wednesday. Deep down, both sets of supporters will be dreading coming up against big clubs at this stage, whilst the likes of Stevenage and Harrogate get to go elsewhere.
The added spice for Hull fans is the return of Phil Parkinson, who had a disaster of a spell as manager back in 2006. In 24 games, the last 13 times and is not remembered fondly at the KCom. That’s a factor concerning Hull supporters about the draw, amongst other things as you’ll see below.
