Portsmouth handed significant boost in hunt for 26-year-old

Portsmouth have been handed a significant boost in their chase for 26-year-old Sean Raggett, as the free agent has joined up with them for pre-season training.

As reported by Portsmouth News, Raggett is with the rest of the squad as they prepare for a September 12th start following his release from Norwich City. Raggett appeared at the club’s Roko training base this morning, ahead of what seems like the completion of his permanent move to Fratton Park.

The central defender made 26 appearances for Pompey last season in a campaign which saw the Blues’ promotion hopes ended in the Playoff semi-finals against Oxford United. He made a name for himself after leaving Dover Athletic for the then National League outfit Lincoln City where he made 76 appearances across two seasons. Raggett was part of the historic FA Cup run in 2016-17 scoring the goal in the 1-0 win against Premier League Burnley which sent them through to the last eight of the competition.
That earned him a move to Norwich City, but he struggled to break into the Canaries set up, making just two appearances in his spell at Carrow Road. He later registered seven appearances in the Championship on-loan at Rotherham in 2017-18, but injuries forced him to be recalled prematurely.

It now appears he is likely to reappear at Pompey on a more permanent basis as Kenny Jackett looks to correct two failed play-off attempts in as many years.

Our View

Raggett is certainly a strong defender at this level, but his somewhat languid style doesn’t always inspire confidence amongst supporters. However, it is a fallacy to underestimate him for looking occasionally laid-back on the ball, as he is a fearless and committed competitor who will fight for any cause.

He is a huge asset to a club at this level and Portsmouth fans should be delighted to see him training with the club, ahead of the expected announcement later this week.
