‘Project buy promotion, again’ – These fans clash as Mansfield Town sign L2 playmaker

Mansfield Town have continued their strengthening this summer by adding George Maris from Cambridge United to their ranks for an undisclosed fee.

In a summer peppered with uncertainty for many clubs, the Stags are stealing a march on their rivals with a number of key signings, including paying a fee for Maris. The 24-year-old is the seventh new signing Graham Coughlan has made this summer, setting out their stall early for a promotion challenge.

Maris came through the Barnsley youth system and enjoyed loan spells at Nuneaton Town, Guiseley and finally National League side Lincoln City,  before signing for Cambridge United in June 2016. The cultured midfielder has gone on to make 150 appearances for the U’s and scoring 22 goals. He is well known to Joe Dunne, former manager of Cambridge who is now number two at Mansfield Town.

Mansfield manager Graham Coughlan spoke highly of his new arrival, saying: “George is a very technical player with lots of ability and a great work ethic. “He will bring us creativity in the final third and very good delivery at set pieces. He will represent the badge with pride and I’m sure he will prove to be a very good addition to our squad.”

The move is one likely to raise a few eyebrows across the division, especially seeing as there is a fee involved. Fans from both clubs have had their say and it is fair to assert that they disagree both on Maris’ potential, and on Mansfield’s intentions.
