As reported by The Real EFL yesterday, Lincoln City have signed defender Alan Sheehan on a short-term deal until the end of the season.
The Imps are currently 17th in League One and hoping to remain in the third tier for the first time since the 1984/85 season, but face crucial games against Burton Albon and Tranmere Rovers in the next fortnight. Sheehan, who has been a free agent since leaving Luton Town, will add much-needed experience to the group, both on and off the field.
“He can play as a central defender, the left of a three [centre-backs] and can fill in at left-back too,” said Michael Appleton.
“He’s played lots and lots of game. He’s a very good footballer with a good range of passing. He’ll be a very good influence – similar to Liam Bridcutt – off the pitch with the young players.”
Sheehan began his career with Leicester City but has also played for Leeds, Luton, Bradford, Swindon and Notts County in permanent spells. He’s twice captained the Hatters to promotion, from League Two in 2017/18 and again as champions of League One last season. However, he made just four appearances for the club after Graeme Jones took over, the last of which came as they were beaten 4-0 by Bournemouth in the FA Cup.
Some Imps’ fans believe this spells the end for veteran defender Jason Shackell, who hasn’t appeared for the club since giving away a penalty and scoring an own goal in the 4-3 reverse at Accrington Stanley a few weeks ago, which is where we begin our roundup of reaction, which includes several Luton Town fans waxing lyrical about their club hero.
Thanks for the last few years Mr Shackell. 👍
