‘Lost his way’, ‘Toxic bloke’ – Plenty of Forest Green fans have had enough with 51-y/o

Forest Green suffered yet another defeat as the expected promotion bid faded into the distance at Glanford Park yesterday afternoon.

Exciting Newcastle United target John McAtee bagged the only goal of the game to lift Scunthorpe 17 points clear of the solitary relegation spot. They’re now only seven behind Forest Green, who in turn are nine points shy of seventh.

Mark Cooper’s side were one of the pre-season favourites, but are eight games without a win and well adrift of the chasing pack. They were unlucky in Lincolnshire though, both sides had chances in the first half but neither keeper was properly tested.

The second half began explosively, as McAtee fired into the bottom corner just a minute after the restart. The former Shrewsbury man could have had another not long after but was foiled by Rovers’ stopper Lewis Thomas.

Defender Farrend Rawson did waste a great chance to earn Forest Green a point, but it would have been one they barely deserved. Manager Mark Cooper tended to agree, saying after the game: ‘We weren’t clinical enough in the final third, and we didn’t have enough urgency we needed.”

Cooper is in his fourth season as manager of Rovers, having earned promotion from the National League in his first campaign back in 2016/17. Since then, despite his chairman’s bold claims, his side hasn’t managed to find enough form to trouble the top three, although they were beaten play-off semi-finalists last year.

Plenty of fans, of both Forest Green and other clubs, have had their say on the current situation.
