‘Nothing without fans’, ‘Pack your bags’ – Many Colchester fans express anger after Port Vale defeat

Port Vale moved above Colchester United in the League Two play-off race yesterday with a resounding 3-0 win at Vale Park.

Mark Cullen rounded off an impressive individual display with a brace as Vale moved up to sixth place, knocking Colchester into seventh. Tom Conlon put the home side ahead just before the quarter-hour mark. Rhys Browne outpaced Ryan Jackson and fed Conlon, who fired it past former Ipswich stopper Dean Gerken.

Cristian Montano could have added a second for the hosts, but Colchester also came close when Leon Legge cleared Ben Stevenson’s shot off the line.

After the break, John Askey’s side upped the ante; Harry Pell didn’t deal with David Worrall’s ball and it was left to Cullen to pick up and slot home. With a little under 20 minutes left on the clock, the former Blackpool man struck again. He met a Luke Joyce pass and ensured Gerken was beaten for the third time.

126 hardy souls from Essex made the 400-mile round trip and were left thoroughly disappointed at their third defeat in four matches. The Us have only won three in 12 since Boxing Day and are in danger of falling out of the top seven, something these supporters are not impressed with.
