‘Horrendous’, ‘Embarrassing’ – These Cambridge United fans react to humiliating home defeat v Salford

Cambridge United were humbled at home last night as League Two’s most ambitious side, Salford City, rolled them over by four goals to nil.

It was a horrible night for the Us, who have now won just twice in their last 17 games in all competitions. They’ve lost five of the last six and are 18th, ten points clear of bottom team Stevenage.

Adam Rooney scored twice for the visitors, who have spent big this transfer window, while Ashley Hunter and Ibou Touray were also on target as the Salford secured their biggest win in the Football League.

It could have been much different had Cambridge taken their opening chance; Paul Lewis missed with a header in the 29th minute and Salford took the lead three minutes later with their first chance. Former Lincoln City winger Bruno Andrade got in behind the defence and crossing for Rooney, who fired home.

Rooney netted his second from the penalty spot in the second half after Greg Taylor tripped Brandon Thomas-Asante, and within ten minutes of the second period starting, Liam Hogan’s ball into the box dropped to Hunter to finish coolly.

Touray’s ambitious ball beat Dimitar Mitov at his near post two minutes from time to compound Cambridge’s misery and their fans are not happy. They reacted angrily on Twitter, seemingly wishing it was their manager who had been sacked today and not Scunthorpe United’s.
