Gillingham and Rochdale shared the spoils this afternoon in a game between two sides hoping to put some space between them and the bottom three in League One.
The result leaves the Gills in 13th position, with a gap of 14 points between them and Tranmere Rovers in 21st. Rochdale are not quite as comfortable, they’ve now got a seven-point advantage over Mickey Mellon’s FA Cup heroes, having played two games fewer.
Ian Henderson gave the hosts the lead in the 28th minutes after Jack Bonham’s foul on Rhys Norrington-Davies, but Steve Evans’ side restored parity four minutes later as Jordan Roberts nodded home Olly Lee’s cross.
Debutant John Akinde then claimed a headed assist on the hour mark as Roberts claimed his second, before Aaron Wilbraham nodded an assist of his own for Stephen Dooley to make it 2-2.
Roberts’ double ensured that Gillingham took a share of the spoils and his link-up play with Akinde, who signed on Friday from Lincoln City, has left these Gills fans in little doubt as to what they want to see on Wednesday night when they entertain Shrewsbury Town. One player, with three goals in 27 matches, is certainly not top of their list for a starting birth against Sam Ricketts’ side, as you’ll see below.
Start Akinde and Roberts as a pair on Wednesday. Hanlan needs benching for a bit. Missed yet another easy chance today, runs around but I’m losing patience of the same sequence each week him missing simple chances

Fair do’s. Maybe bring in Willock if he’s fit?

Akinde did okay on debut considering he only signed yesterday. Won his fair share and was to thank for creating our second goal.

Jordan Roberts was very good today, scored 2 well taken goals. I’d start him and Akinde up front on Wednesday. Think Hanlan needs some time out the side.

Of course he 100% should score, but don’t get why he seems to be getting more abuse for it than our other striker who misses big chances like clockwork. We know they both can’t finish, maybe Roberts and Akinde as a pair is worth a look. https://t.co/3q4GagnBIA

@BBCKentSport @robbie30904589 @GillsDebate @GillsInTheBlood @GillsLes @TonyC1510 @ridleycrag1 Good news &bad news perhaps in that Gills unbeaten in 9. Pleased 4 Roberts & with Akinde we may well have the missing lethal pieces to our much needed forward line – wins should follow
