Sunderland are interested in Cardiff City midfielder Will Vaulks according to the Daily Mail.
The report claims Stoke City and Bristol City have also been eyeing a move for the Wales international.
Vaulks moved to Cardiff from Rotherham in the summer for a fee believed to be in the region of £3 million, but he’s failed to establish himself in South Wales, making only nine appearances for the Bluebirds.
The twenty-six-year-old was an important member of the Rotherham side that won promotion from League One through the playoffs in 2017/18. He made forty-seven outings, scoring five goals and five assists.
The following campaign, he made forty-one Championship appearances but was unable to help the Millers avoid relegation back to League One, despite scoring seven times.
Vaulks best position is probably centre-midfield but he can play-wing back, potentially adding some much-needed versatility to Phil Parkinson’s squad.
After a slow start, the Black Cats are now in sixth place with a real chance of at least a push for the playoffs in what is turning out to be a wide-open League One promotion race.
What a signing this would be, Vaulks is a fantastic player at League One level and would add immediate strength and guile to the Sunderland engine room.
However, he is was keen to stay in the Championship in the summer and left Rotherham after their relegation.
With Championship clubs once again interested; it would be a real coup for the Black Cats if they convince Vaulks to head north and drop a level, even if it is only temporary.
