‘Going long ball’, ‘Good luck’ – Plenty of fans react as Blackpool announce latest new face

Blackpool pulled off something of a coup yesterday as they signed former Cardiff City striker Gary Madine on an 18-month deal.

The 29-year-old has previously had a short spell with the Tangerines, scoring three times in 15 appearances during a loan spell from Sheffield Wednesday. He’s a four-time promotion winner, who has already helped take Sheffield Wednesday and Bolton Wanderers to the Championship in 2012 and 2017 respectively. Those two spells were his most successful, scoring a combined total of 54 goals across the two spells.

He left Bolton for Cardiff in 2018, but couldn’t replicate his scintillating form in South Wales. He did spend time on loan at Sheffield United last season, scoring three times as they earned promotion to the Premier League.

“Gary is an experienced player who can add a great deal to the team,” said manager Simon Grayson. “I watched him a few times last season when he was at Sheffield United, who he helped get into the Premier League, so we’re thrilled to bring someone of his calibre in.”

Madine is no stranger to controversy. In October 2013 he was jailed for 18 months after being found guilty of causing actual bodily harm and grievous bodily harm in two separate attacks.

Blackpool fans are still delighted to see the player arrive at their club, especially as he has scored regularly in the Championship for Bolton and played a part in Sheffield United’s rise last season.

Here’s a selection of the reaction to the move, both from fans of the Seasiders as well as other clubs.
