Cameron McGeehan has completed a loan deal with Portsmouth this afternoon, leaving Championship side Barnsley.
The 24-year old helped Barnsley to promotion last season, scoring six goals in 44 appearances as they won League One. He’s played 13 times in the second tier for the struggling Tykes this season, bagging twice.
The central midfielder has played for Northern Ireland at U17, U19 and U21 levels, as well as earning a senior call-up, although he had to withdraw from the squad through injury. He was due to be part of the squad to face Panama and Costa Rica.
Having previously played for Luton Town, Norwich and Cambridge, the playmaker has plenty to offer Kenny Jackett’s side and immediately he stated his intent to win promotion.
He told Pompey’s site: “I wouldn’t be coming here if I didn’t think we could get promoted and it’s still really tight at the top of the table.
“I’m sure everyone would like us to be a bit higher up, but we’re in a good position to go on a run in the second half of the season.”
McGeehan began his career as a youth at Chelsea, joining the Blues from Fulham for £80,000 when he was 10 years old.
Pompey fans have seen the move as a statement of intent and perhaps this will ease some of the pressure Kenny Jackett has found himself under in recent months. this, despite an incident at Fratton Park earlier in his career where he is alleged to have been involved in an altercation with Pompey medical staff.
All will be forgiven if he takes them back to the Championship.
Statement of intent this January, a quality signing. Welcome to the club. Enjoy your time here & let's make it a memorable one!

Absolutely quality player, fantastic signing for #Pompey. Completely putting aside the unsavory incident from a few years back; and based purely on footballing ability, I'm more than happy with that signing. #BreakALeg

Solid signing but will have a job on his hands to win over our fans after spitting at our medical staff. I hope he’s a roaring success however, quality player

Brilliant for you on Football Manager? Well, he’s a dead cert then! ;oD
Back to real life, he showed a lot of promise, but seems to have gone ‘out of favour’ at Barnsley. Possibly in his last season of contract too. He’s still young enough, and will want a decent club. The ‘incident’ wasn’t clever, but there was a lot of misunderstanding in there, I think (only he knows). You know when you’ve broken your leg (generally).
