Grimsby Town are interested in experienced Plymouth Argyle striker Billy Clarke as reported by Plymouth Live
The former Ipswich Town, Blackpool, Crawley and Bradford City striker has made twelve appearances since signing for the Pilgrims in October, but he is yet to score, although only three outings have been from the start.
New Mariners boss Ian Holloway arrived at Blundell Park in a blaze of publicity, and he’s got off to a tremendous start winning his first two games in charge, but goals remain a problem. Grimsby have only managed twenty-four goals in twenty-four games, and it is widely reported locally that it is a problem the high-profile boss is looking to solve in January.
The much-travelled Clarke is on a short-term deal at Home Park which ends in the middle of January so would be available on a free. Plymouth boss Ryan Lowe was recently coy on the subject of offering Clarke a new deal, but with reports the Argyle boss is eyeing a move for Portsmouth outcast Brett Pitman, Clarkes short stay in Devon could well be coming to an end.
Our View
Clarke has never been prolific, but he could still do a job in League Two.
Grimsby lack bite up front, but Clarke’s know-how could well be what’s needed to help Holloway find a solution to the Mariners lack of goals.
