It wasn’t to be for Colchester United as their Carabao Cup dream was ended By Manchester United at Old Trafford last night.
Despite a spirited display and lots of noise from the stands, a strong Man Utd team scored three second-half goals to progress to the semi-finals and set up a mouthwatering tie with neighbours Manchester City.
The League Two outfit, who had already beaten Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Tottenham to reach the last eight for the first time since 1974, were roared on by more than 5,000 raucous travelling fans and defended brilliantly to go in at half-time all square.
However, their illustrious opponents stamped their authority on the game in the second forty-five minutes to leave the U’s defeated but incredibly proud of an unbelievable run in the competition.
Their effort both on and off the pitch did not go unnoticed by some United fans when they took to social media to react to the game. Many fans were quick to compliment the U’s performance and their loud supporters on a great night for the Essex club.
Here is a selection of their congratulatory responses on Twitter.
Respect to Colchester and thanks for a good game. Good team, best of luck with the rest of your season lads✌️
