Ipswich Town exited the FA Cup last night and despite winning their first game in the competition for years against Lincoln City, will not be in the third round for the first time in over a decade.
They’ve now played four fixtures in this year’s competition, coming back from 1-0 down against Lincoln in the first game and seeing a penalty missed by Tyler Walker, being held 0-0 throughout the replay until a late goal snatched a win. They then drew at St Andrew’s with Coventry City, necessitating another game at Portman Road.
Jordan Shipley and Maxime Biamou gave Coventry a 2-0 lead in the first half which effectively ended the hosts run, although Luke Garbutt’s late consolation gave them a glimmer of hope. It wasn’t enough and Ipswich can now concentrate on the league, which is what Paul Lambert seems to have been doing all season.
He’s used the cup competitions to rotate his squad, even the prestigious FA Cup. Whilst promotion may well be the top priority, fans do want to see some excitement and progression in the premier cup competition and that’s certainly the feeling amongst supporters responding on Twitter.
Lambert will be pleased. 3rd round day another week he can let his players not play and get rusty

Well there’s a surprise. Towns truly woeful record in the FA Cup continues. Playing a weakened team against one of the best teams in the division. This squad rotation is great isn’t it, but what do l know I’m just a fan aren’t l Lambert.

We have to take the positives out of this… we finally haven’t got knocked out of the 3rd round.. every cloud.

I’ve supported Ipswich my whole life and the last few years all I’ve wanted is to thrash someone 1-0…. This is how bad its become pic.twitter.com/2uheKb8xRf

That was shocking. 11 players who looked as though they had never played together before. Rotation strategy? May want to re think that one

Went for 1st time in 2 yrs ’cause of £10 ticket. Might be another 2 yrs b4 I go again. Absolutely shocking effort. @Coventry_City played well & deserved to win.
