Southend United are looking to add pace to their floundering attack with a move for Walsall’s flying winger Wes McDonald as reported by Football Insider.
The report claims the League One strugglers are plotting to sign the attacker on a free transfer in January.
After a slow start, the twenty-two-year-old has been in impressive form for the Saddlers since signing in the summer, but his short-term contract leaves him a free agent in the new year, and with no new deal on the horizon, other clubs have started to show an interest.
The former Birmingham City youngster has scored once and contributed another assist in his fourteen appearances for the Saddlers this season. The versatile forward is happy in the West Midlands and recently expressed a strong desire to extend his stay at the League Two outfit where his performances have endeared him to the Walsall faithful.
However, reporter Pete O’Rourke claims his eye-catching displays mean a move to a higher level is firmly on the cards in January with Southend boss Sol Campbell set to do battle with Scottish Premiership outfit Kilmarnock for his signature.
Both clubs have been closely monitoring McDonald’s progress according to the report.
Worrying news for many Walsall fans who have really taken to the tricky speedster.
An offer of a new contract has been muted and it sounds like the club needs to hurry up if they are not to lose their man.
Southend are desperate to strengthen throughout the squad but have no money, so a move for McDonald would make sense.
However, we feel he will at least see out the season at Walsall.
