Sunderland’s misery continued yesterday as they were beaten 2-1 at the Stadium of Light by a resilient Burton Albion side.
The Black Cats took a 19th-minute lead through Aiden McGeady, but were immediately pinned back by Ryan Edwards. It remained 1-1 until the game had little over 20 minutes left, Liam Boyce grabbing a winner for Nigel Clough’s side.
It was another dark chapter in the club’s history, with new manager Phil Parkinson struggling to get them pointing in the right direction. They’ve dropped down to 11th in the table and have won just one of their last nine fixtures, that a narrow 1-0 win against struggling Southend United.
That said, they are just three points outside of the play-off places in a tightly-packed League One table.
That won’t be enough to placate their supporters who are being driven to the edge of despair. With an expensively-assembled squad of misfits and a manager seemingly unable to affect a ‘new manager’ bounce, they’re out o all cup competitions already.
“We didn’t respond when we conceded the second and that’s simply not good enough,” said Parkinson.
“We didn’t show enough character or conviction in our play and I accept the reaction from the supporters because the last quarter of the game wasn’t good enough.”
It’s going to be a long, hard winter and these fans are not looking forward to it one bit.
