Sunderland supporters famously told Newcastle fans to ‘enjoy Burton’ after they survived the drop from the Premier League at the expense of the Magpies in 2016.
It is a comment that’s now come back to bite them after Nigel Clough’s men came away from the Stadium of Light with all three points last night after a famous 2-1 victory.
Burton have now won three and drawn one of their five fixtures against the Black Cats since their first meeting in 2017. Indeed, in 2018 their win at the Stadium of Light condemned Sunderland to third-tier football.
As predicted on therealefl.com yesterday, Burton heaped pressure on under-fire Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson with a positive display. They came back from conceding an early penalty, converted by Aiden McGeady, to snatch the win with goals from Ryan Edwards and Liam Boyce and send Black Cats fans into meltdown at the final whistle.
The home crowd chanted ‘sacked in the morning’ at the hapless Parkinson, and the toxic atmosphere continued on social media after the game. However, one set of fans were quick to congratulate Burton on the result and share in the excitement of the Brewers victory.
Newcastle fans expressed delight at the latest defeat at the hands of one of the so-called minnows of League One. While it is only natural to enjoy the misfortune of a rival club, the experience of Sunderland fans is chastening. Football can be a cruel mistress, but at the moment, Magpie fans are more than happy to bask in the glory of the Lads freefall.
