It’s fair to say Bolton Wanderers are not the most popular of teams right now. That’s a sharp contrast to the summer when neutral fans were rooting for them to get back on their feet.
They started the season with a heavy points deduction and have only just moved into positive figures. However, in cancelling their game with Brentford and postponing another game against Doncaster, they’re slowly becoming unpopular with much of League One.
Indeed, now they’ve been told they’re effectively getting away with their misdemeanours, opposition fans have become quite angry. Trotters fans have reacted with equal anger, especially to Doncaster Rovers.
That’s why seeing them go down 7-1 to Accrington Stanley yesterday clearly delighted many supporters in the division. It won’t stop claims that Gillingham, Ipswich and Tranmere have an unfair advantage after facing Bolton’s youth team though and sadly for Bolton, their status a much-beloved club under threat has been replaced.
They’re now the villain of the hour, putting postponed matches off until after January to give themselves a maximum chance of points and generally acting in a manner which feels at odds with the league’s fair play ethos to many fans.
That’s certainly reflected in the tide of tweets seemingly delighted at their hammering yesterday.
