Southend United slumped to their fifteenth league defeat of the season as Oxford United further enhanced their playoff credentials with a comfortable 4-0 win at Roots Hall.
A Matty Taylor brace helped ease the U’s to three points and left Southend boss Sol Campbell admitting to the Southend Echo the Shrimpers have ‘a mountain to climb’ if they are to avoid the drop.
Campbell’s men sit second from bottom of League One, eleven points from safety, and firmly staring down the barrel of League Two football next season.
They have now conceded fifty-two league goals from eighteen games, an average of just short of three per match in a dismal season that is finally starting to take its toll on many loyal Southend fans.
Many supporters admitted they had reached their threshold of tolerance after watching another dreadful home performance when they took to social media to react to the result. A freefall that started under Chris Powell and continued under Kevin Bond is showing no signs of abating under Sol Campbell, and many fans have reached the stage of binning their season tickets and pointing the finger of blame at their under-performing players.
It is a terrible time to be a Southend fan, and while some are demonstrating the gallows humour that tends to keep many supporters sane in times of despair, it is clear some have had enough.
