Sunderland assistant manager Steve Parkin has been speaking to the press ahead of the Black Cats EFL Trophy tie at Scunthorpe United tomorrow night.
In comments posted on the club’s official Twitter account, Parkin addressed the team’s lacklustre performance in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Gillingham in the FA Cup by stressing the display was ‘a lesson for us’ in playing well for the whole ninety minutes.
He also added that with no game on Saturday, Sunderland would take a strong squad to Scunthorpe in a game they ‘need to win.’
The vastly experienced Parkin was new boss Phil Parkinson’s assistant at both Bradford City and Bolton Wanderers. He’s enjoyed a long, varied and successful coaching career which includes the Iron as one of his former clubs.
However, the duo has not found life easy since taking over at the Stadium of Light from Jack Ross and his team. They have won only two of their seven games in charge since taking over last month, prompting some furious supporter reaction on social media.
Many fans cannot see anything other than another season in English football’s third tier after a start to the campaign that has underwhelmed a large section of the club’s fanbase, and so far hasn’t improved under Parkinson and his assistant.
Criticised for being uninspiring, the assistant manager’s latest comments about lesson learning, in particular, didn’t cut any ice with plenty of Sunderland fans, already losing patience with Parkin and Parkinson, who they find dull and dreary, not unlike their predecessor Ross.
