Sunderland’s miserable run continued this afternoon as they were held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Gillingham at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats have won two of their last seven fixtures and were fancied against Steve Evans struggling Gillingham side in the FA Cup. All seemed to be going well as they went ahead through Aiden McGeady, with them holding a lead at half time.
Former Luton striker Olly Lee bagged a leveller for the Gills just after the restart and that’s how it remained. The home side rarely looked like breaking the deadlock and ended the afternoon with fewer shots on target than their guests.
Sunderland have a free weekend courtesy of the international break, but their replay is likely to be the 19th or 20th of November. With Scunthorpe up on Tuesday night in the EFL Trophy, the league is taking a backseat for the immediate future.
It’ll be a long drive down to Kent for the game and something the fans are not happy about. After hammering Gillingham last season, supporters feel that there has been little progress; if anything they’re going backwards. That’s certainly the feeling of these fans we’ve found on Twitter.
How are we so far from the team that battered Gillingham 4-1 away last season? We are going backwards.
