Northampton boss reveals significant injury news
Northampton Town manager Keith Curle has revealed some unusual and significant injury news.
Midfielder Shaun McWilliams was absent from the Cobblers 2-2 draw away to Oldham Athletic at the weekend after falling ill before the game and Curle confirmed the twenty-one-year-old underwent an appendix operation on Saturday evening.
The standard recovery time for the operation is two to four weeks, but the Cobblers have not set a date for his return.
McWilliams’ spell on the sidelines will no doubt be a blow for Curle. The Northampton born academy product had become a key player in Curle’s midfield, starting seventeen of the Cobblers’ last eighteen matches before he missed out on the trip to Boundary Park. He’s made seventy-five appearances in total for the Cobblers since making his debut in 2017, and his ability to get around the pitch and break up play will be a big miss for the Cobblers’ boss over the coming weeks.
Speaking to the Northampton Chronicle, Curle said: ‘It goes without saying that we wish Shaun well.’
‘He had an operation on Saturday evening, the medical staff are looking after him, and of course, we wish him a speedy recovery.’
‘We look forward to having him back and available again as soon as possible.’
Northampton have recently been improving after a difficult start, and they currently sit ninth in the League Two table.
Our View
An unusual injury to be reporting, perhaps illness is a better word, but all the same, McWilliams has improved a great deal since his breakthrough and Cobblers fans are proud to call him one of their own.
Despite some impressive summer business, the Cobblers have struggled for consistency.
Nonetheless, they have shown recent signs of making a promotion push, and McWilliams has made an important contribution to their better form.
Cobblers fans will wish him a speedy recovery and hope he’s back out on the pitch quickly.
