Port Vale sprang a surprise against close rivals Crewe yesterday, turning them over 1-0 at Gresty Road.
A gutsy display from John Askey’s side saw them dent Crewe’s promotion aspirations, although it’s far too early in the season to call it a blow. Jake Taylor’s goal just after the hour mark was enough to give the Valiants a win, lifting them to 10th in the table. Crewe tumbled to fourth, although in a tightly-packed promotion hunt, just three points separate fifth from top.
It was a big win for Vale, in the absence of matches against Stoke, this is very much the local derby with just ten miles between the two grounds. Defender Leon Legge certainly enjoyed the win, taking to Twitter to express his joy.
“I love playing at Gresty Rd,” he wrote. “What a result, fully deserved win against Rivals Crewe, once again we showed what we can really do, Vale fans superb once again! enjoy the bragging rights and enjoy the weekend. Gresty is our dance floor.”
As you can imagine, such a tweet has drawn both sets of fans to Twitter to comment, but it was Port Vale’s positivity that shone through the most. After turbulent times under owner Norman Smurthwaite, their summer takeover has inspired hope of a brighter future and a win like this only further enhances that belief.
Here’s what their fans are thinking about it this morning.
