The ongoing saga of investment in League One side Sunderland was finally resolved yesterday as the club released a statement confirming significant sums of money coming into the Stadium of Light.
An article by the Chronicle suggests they’ll be seeing as much as £10m flowing into the bank in order to facilitate the second phase of the club’s regeneration. The first phase, which included shedding their high earners and putting together a capable League One squad, has now been completed.
Fans might argue that sacking Jack Ross and seeing £4m worth of striker flop massively wasn’t part of the plan, but in the main they’re on course. Now, with the investment secured, they’ll be hoping to move forward and earn promotion to establish themselves as a Championship side.
The club’s statement read: “FPP Sunderland Limited is backing the current management of Sunderland AFC through a significant investment it has made in the club’s holding company, Madrox Partners Ltd.
“With the completion of the new investment, (chairman) Mr Stewart Donald remains the majority and controlling shareholder of Madrox Partners. Other terms of the investment are not being disclosed.
“The new investment is consistent with Mr Donald’s intention to attract additional financial resources to support the second phase of his plan to regenerate the club, including investing in the club’s academy, recruitment structure, stadium infrastructure and fan experience.”
Of course, their fans are delighted to finally have some positive news. Phil Parkinson’s reign hasn’t got off to a sparkling start, elimination in the EFL Cup was a big blow after turning over Premier League opposition and their league form has been sketchy at best.
Still, it’s given this lot plenty to talk about, with some tongue in cheek replies hidden amongst the plethora of different joy GIFS.
