Interesting Swindon Town transfer news emerges

Swindon Town has not yet contacted Shrewsbury about extending the loan of midfielder Anthony Grant, as reported by the Shropshire Star.

The former Chelsea man has appeared ten times for Richie Wellens’ League Two side after being frozen out at the New Meadow. He was forced to train with the reserves before being shipped out on loan, but as yet there hasn’t been talk of extending the deal.

His current loan spell ends in January and he’s recently settled into the Robins’ first-team setup. He put in a solid display as they beat Crawley Town 4-0 at the weekend with Swindon now in fifth and launching a serious promotion challenge.

“We’ve had no contact from them so there’s nothing to comment on,” confirmed Sam Ricketts, Shrews boss.

“Granty’s gone there and done well and I’m not surprised because he’s a good player and they’re having a good season. If Swindon want to get in touch they will and if they don’t then they don’t.”

32-year-old Grant began his career with Chelsea, but made just one senior appearance for the Blues. He spent time on loan at Oldham, Wycombe, Luton Town and Southend before a permanent move to Root Hall.

He’s since appeared for Crewe, Peterborough and Port Vale, as well as having a stint with Stevenage.

Our View

Grant is a combative midfielder who clearly has plenty to offer a League Two side, but his Shrewsbury career seems to be over.

Swindon could do worse than add him to their ranks, but a permanent deal would seem unlikely. At 32 he’s not exactly one for the future, which could mean and extended loan before finding himself a free agent in the summer.
