Newcastle United striker set for recall from a disappointing loan spell at League Two club

Newcastle United are set to review Elias Sorensen’s loan at Carlisle United in January, with a recall for the youngster looking likely as reported by the Shields Gazette.

The twenty-year-old signed a season-long loan deal with the Cumbrians in the summer to gain valuable first-team experience and aid his development, but he’s found opportunities limited at Brunton Park. The striker has made only one League Two start and is yet to find the net in nine outings across all competitions, many of which have come from the bench.

It is not an ideal situation for the youngster, and despite recent claims by Carlisle boss Steven Pressley that the Magpies were happy with how the loan was going, it now appears the Premier League club is more than concerned.

Speaking to the Gazette, Newcastle’s Under-23 coach Neil Redfearn made it clear he is keen to see the striker start more League Two games. He said: ‘I know I have said on the record in the past that he needs to fight it out, but obviously the idea of him going out on loan is that he plays.’

‘So if he’s on the bench, and not coming on, it’s not what we want.’

‘The reports that we are getting back are that he’s working really hard, and desperately trying to do the right things to get in, but there is no getting away from the fact he needs to play.’

The report claims Loan co-ordinator Shola Ameobi will make the final decision on whether to recall Sorensen from Carlisle in January.

Our View

This a strange situation, Carlisle are struggling yet Sorensen is warming the bench.

Newcastle clearly think he should be playing, but Carlisle boss Pressley, having signed him on a season-long loan, is not picking the young striker.

Sorensen was recalled from Blackpool in similar circumstances last season, and many Toon fans think a poor attitude is hampering his undoubted talent.

If Newcastle recalls him again, you have to wonder what the future has in store for the youngster as it is obvious something is not quite right.

The question is, is it the player or the manager who is at fault?
