Tranmere Rovers needed an eighty-fifth-minute penalty from substitute Paul Mullin to come from behind and earn a point at home to struggling Southend United last night.
It was Mullin who was fouled in the box and he picked himself up to smash home from twelve yards with the clock running down.
Tranmere have not found life easy in League One following last season’s promotion, but their hopes of a valuable three points were dealt an early blow when Southend took the lead through Tom Hopper after only nine minutes. The Shrimpers came into the game with only one win all season and they nearly doubled their lead when an unmarked Tim Dieng headed wide from six yards.
Rovers came out for the second half much improved and saw a Neil Danns effort cleared off the line before Mullins strike finally drew them level.
A full treatment room is undoubtedly not helping Micky Mellon’s men, but the result leaves them in seventeenth place, and Rovers fans are getting increasingly concerned at their plight this season.
Many took too social media to voice their concerns, no doubt disappointed by the failure to beat a team who’ve been one of the divisions whipping boys this season.
It is fair to say last week’s 1-0 win at high-flying Coventry City appears to be a distant memory.
Indeed, some fans believe that Rovers actually raise their game against the better sides in the league and struggle against the so-called poorer teams, which might be why some are looking forward to the trip to Sunderland on Tuesday night.
