Bolton’s big chance, misery for Portsmouth: Our League One expert examines the weekend ahead

AFC Wimbledon v Portsmouth

Portsmouth have a few games in hand over those above them, but who would have predicted they’d be down in 16th after ten matches? With just 13 points to show for their endeavour and one win in five away from home, they’re carrying on the poor form which saw them slip out of the top two last season.

Kenny Jackett is surely under some pressure and the last thing he needs is a trip to AFC Wimbledon. Despite boasting the likes of John Marquis and Ronan Curtis in their attack, Pompey have still only managed an xG of 0.92 away from home, compared with achieving 1.14 goals. They’re getting the rub of the green a little when they’re away from Fratton Park and that’s got to be a worry when you consider their only win was at Doncaster, who had 24 efforts to Pompey’s six.

On the other hand, Wimbledon are doing what they always seem to do; start badly and pick up. The controversy over Wally Downes suspension hasn’t affected their stride and in Marcus Forss, they’ve unearthed a loan striker with a real golden touch. He turned down the chance to play Under 21 football for his country this weekend, preferring to stay and help his side against Southend. They won 4-1, he bagged a hattrick and lifted the Wombles out of the bottom four.

Their xG is sufficient to suggest they’ll score a goal, but Pompey are sure to be in the hunt too. We think this is all set to be a draw and one that might just bust a few accumulators across the country. Be warned.
